Two-dimensional cyclotron-resonance maser array: Spectral measurements with one and two electron beams

چکیده
The cyclotron-resonance-maser ~CRM! array is a device in which separate electron beams perform simultaneously a cyclotron interaction with a single Bloch wave in an artificial lattice. The CRM array has the capability of generating high-power microwaves with relatively low-voltage electron beams. The low-voltage operation reduces the system overhead and leads to a relatively compact device. In future schemes, the CRM array may radiate directly to free space as an active phased-array antenna. Furthermore, the phase of each element output, and therefore the antenna far-field radiation pattern, can be varied by the electron-beam voltages. This paper presents an experimental demonstration of a CRM array. In this experiment, a twodimensional CRM array is operated with one and two electron beams ~;10 keV, 0.1 A each!. Microwave output signals are observed in frequencies around 7 GHz in an axial magnetic field of ;3 kG. Spectral measurements of the CRM outputs reveal frequency sweeps along the CRM pulses. These are associated with electron-energy variations, in accordance with the theoretical CRM tuning condition. The synchronism of the cyclotron-resonance interaction with a backward spatial harmonic is confirmed. These results promote the efforts toward the realization of large CRM arrays. @S1063-651X~99!02002-4#

Linear analysis of a multibeam cyclotron-resonance maser array
The multibeam cyclotron-resonance maser ~CRM! array is a new concept for compact, high-power CRM devices operating at low voltages. The CRM array studied in this paper employs low-energy electron beams, which are propagating in coupled channels in a two-dimensional periodic waveguide. A static magnetic field spirals the electrons in synchronism with a spatial harmonic of the electromagnetic wav...

A two-dimensional, self-consistent, nonlinear model is used to determine the growth rate and saturation level of the cyclotron two-stream instability for two weakly relativistic electron beams co-propagating along a uniform magnetic field with an inverted population in the perpendicular momentum. This instability has been proposed recently as the basis for a double-stream cyclotron maser. Good ...
متن کاملTemperature, electron density and in-plane magnetic field dependence of cyclotron relaxation time in the two-dimensional metallic phase
We have performed cyclotron resonance measurements on two-dimensional electrons in the metallic phase. The temperature, electron density and in-plane magnetic field dependence of cyclotron and transport scattering time are reported for a high-mobility Si/SiGe quantum well.
متن کاملPhase and gain measurements in a distributed-loss cyclotron-resonance maser amplifier.
The control of gain and phase delay in a cyclotron-resonance maser (CRM) amplifier is essential for a variety of applications. In this experiment, the gain and phase-delay variations are measured with respect to controlling parameters; the electron-beam current and the axial magnetic field. Following Chu et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 1103 (1995)], the CRM amplifier comprises of a distributed-los...

An analysis of recent free electron laser experiments in combined wiggler and strong axial magnetic fields shows that near resonance, Q,,=kwv,,, the proximity of the cyclotron maser instability precludes an unambiguous identification of the radiation mechanism ( 2,, is the cyclotron frequency in the axial field, kw is the wiggler wavenumber, and v,, the axial electron velocity).
